Abbreviations

To a large extent, we have endeavoured to avoid using abbreviations in the database. Where there are abbreviations (in the bibliographies, for example) we follow the guidelines of the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) system. Scholarly abbreviations used in the database are:

fl. Floruit / flourished – we have used this date to indicate the period during which an author’s work was published in cases where we do not have the dates of birth or death of a writer

Ms., mss. Manuscript, manuscripts
n.d.  No date of publication on the book in question
n.p. No place of publication; no publisher name on the book in question

Most of the Irish universities referred to are abbreviated, and they are:
 
UCC University College Cork, recently renamed NUI Cork (National University of Ireland Cork). In one or two bibliographical entries UCC is referred to by its original name, Queen’s College Cork or QCC.
UCG University College Galway, also NUI Galway (National University of Ireland Galway)
NUI Maynooth National University of Ireland Maynooth
UL University of Limerick
UCD University College Dublin
TCD Trinity College Dublin

References in the biographical entries to secondary material – such as other dictionaries of Irish Literature, or works relating to specific writers – can be found in full in the Bibliography which contains a list of all the material we used in compiling the database.
